I said this in my review of Come to Me Quietly, but I'll say it again, A.L. Jackson has a hauntingly beautiful writing style.  I loved Come to Me Quietly and the story it told, and I loved Come to Me Softly just as much.  I often worry when the first book in a series has been wonderful - it sets the bar high for me, but it became apparent very quickly I was not going to be disappointed by Come to Me Softly.

While this was absolutely the story of the next stage of Jared and Aly's relationship, it was more so the story of Jared's journey to forgiveness.  The guilt, anger and sadness he carried from the death of his mother was so deeply ingrained, such a huge part of who he was and such a huge block to achieving true happiness in his future.  Despite Aly's gentle encouragement Jared insists that he doesn't need to face his past, rather he wants to look forward to their future together.  He throws himself wholeheartedly into providing a future for his 'family' and continues to bury his pain and regret, all the while wearing his tragic past as a story for all to see, tattooed across his skin.  He clings so fiercely to his love for Aly, adoring everything about her and yet always doubting he is worthy of her.

Even though he questions it, The connection between Aly and Jared is undeniable, their bond is strong and their understanding of each other so intrinsic it's as if they are one.  They must now face the world together and share their relationship with Aly's family and friends.  While Christopher, Aly's brother has known for some time, the rest of Aly's family is unaware of what has blossomed between Aly and Jared and Aly's father in particular is confronted by the depth and extent of the relationship.  As the two deal with Aly's father's reluctance to accept their relationship, not to mention the questioning of their relationship and choices by others,  Jared's past increasingly begins to steal his nights, haunting his sleep and tormenting him until finally it explodes in a way that has dire consequences for him and Aly.

Come to Me Softly was beautiful.  The emotions it evoked in me were vastly different from Come to Me Quietly.  As much as there was sadness in this story, it wasn't of the heartbreaking nature I experienced as I read Come to Me Quietly.  Rather I found a thread of hope woven through this story, which for me gradually strengthened until reaching the final pages and leaving me feeling very satisfied with the path Jared in particular travelled.

Throughout Come to Me Softly we get to see more of Christopher, Aly's brother.  A feature in Come to Me Quietly and an unending support to Aly in both books, my curiosity as to his story was definitely piqued further in Come to Me Softly, so I was thrilled to read that there will be a further installment in this series and it will be Christopher's story.  The Closer to You series is one that I love and one I think everyone should read.

5 out of 5 stars
